What goes into a survival kit?

I think many of us have thought of putting together a survival kit. According to the federal government, these are the basic elements necessary.

Water, one liter per person per day
Eating, 3-day supply per person (non perishable)
Flashlight with spare batteries
Radio, crank or battery
Dust mask
Whistle
Damp toweletts
Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
maps of local areas
Tin-opener
Prescribed drugs
Baby food (if youinfants)
Pet food and water
airtight container for documents (insurance, bank info, money, ID, etc.)
Extra clothing
Bleach (for disinfecting)
Fire extinguisher
Liters competitions
Feminine Products
tableware (paper plates, plastic forks and knives)
Pen and paper
Playing cards and games

About a year ago a big storm removed the power for most of Western Washington State. We were left without electricity for more than sevendays.

We tend to forget how much we are dependent on electric power. No hot showers, no lights, no kitchen, no TV or radio, and there are no shops or restaurants open worldwide. E 'was really rough. It was actually fun and exciting for a couple of days, and then the real old real fast.
